The Canterbury Volunteer Fire Company resides on Westminster Road. The building was built with the assistance of the membership and was dedicated in 1973 which coincided with the 25th anniversary. The Company proudly provides 24-hour emergency fire and EMS services for the protection of life and property within the 40.1 square miles of the Town of Canterbury.

ET-193 Wins an award!

Today, Canterbury VFC attended Tristate Firefighter meet and trucking show. We are pleased to announce that ET-193 took home “Photographers Choice”. We would like to thank John Daigneault, Thomas Marshall O’Neill and Hannah McGuire for their time on preparing our old gal to look her Sunday best.

UPDATE: 169 SB is closed at Butts bridge with a detour down Depot Rd to 169. NB is closed at Gooseneck. Detour down Lisbon Rd to Bennett Pond rd back to 169. Route 169 is closed at Butts Bridge Road for a wire down. Please seek alternative route.

We have responded to several vehicle accidents in the past few days.  Thankfully no serious injuries have occurred.   We would like everyone to get where they are going safely.   Please remember to always wear your seat belt.  Put your cellphone away, it can wait.  Slow down, an extra minute or two is not worth the risk. And please, with summer growth on the sides of the road please take that extra look before turning into traffic.    Stay safe!!!

Letter from the Deputy Chief’s desk

Good Evening,

Today, was an important day for the future of the Canterbury VFC. This morning, two of our junior members graduated from the Connecticut Fire Academy’s “Introduction to the Fire Service” class of 58. Connor Cooper and Gavin Goodale not only demonstrated professionalism and integrity, but also brought honor to Canterbury VFC and the Community of Canterbury. This program has given them the tools and knowledge to jumpstart their careers in the fire service. We at Canterbury VFC are very proud to have both Connor and Gavin in our ranks.

Personal note from me
I’m very proud of you boys. Thank you for all your hard work and dedication to the community. I look forward to seeing you two grow in the fire service.

At approximately 6:59PM on Tuesday 07/14/2026, Canterbury VFC along with Connecticut State Police, and American Ambulance were dispatched to the area of 441 S Canterbury Rd for reports of a motorcycle crash. Units arrived on scene to find a motorcycle operator with a severe leg injury. Patient was transported to Backus Hospital in Norwich at the Advance Life Support (ALS) level. Fire personnel remained on scene to keep the roadway closed until the removal of the motorcycle.

As always, Canterbury VFC would like to thank the State Police and American Ambulance for their assistance.
